In the Pea Pod

The Little Pea Pod Nursery is a private, independent family nursery in central Oxted, Surrey. Our wonderful house is home to children aged from 3 months to 4 years old each day. We are open full time from 7.30am – 6:30pm, Monday to Friday, 50 weeks of the year.

We encourage all aspects of development from social to physical. We provide a loving and nurturing home-from-home experience for all of our children at our nursery. Most importantly, we celebrate every child’s individuality to build confidence, creativity and independence through their early years learning. Our size means we can offer a more personal care for your child without the fear of them being overawed or lost in a large setting.

We are located in central Oxted, a 4 minute walk away from the train station giving links to London. At The Little Pea Pod Nursery we are proud to be passionate about child nutrition, child development and our environment.

The Nursery offers interchangeable spaces with carefully planned free-flow areas affording children freedom of movement, space, and social interaction.

The Little Pea Pod has a special garden which is secure and entirely child-friendly. It allows an integration between the rooms and outside play in all weathers. All children, including babies, benefit from regular outside activities.

Our enclosed space is use to promote Forestry play, whether building dens, learning about maths and literacy or making pretend camp fires.

Our Setting imageOur Setting image
At The Little Pea Pod Nursery, you can be assured that your child will receive a healthy & organic, balanced diet.

Our organic food:

Additive free, with no genetically modified ingredients

Freshly made daily in our kitchen.

Sourcing organic meat, fruit and vegetables where possible

Balance of nutrients – all meals contain a range of different foods to ensure children receive a balance of nutrients, but also a range of colours and textures to make the food interesting and enjoyable.

All meals are carefully planned and prepared in our own kitchen, to suit every child’s palate. They are nutritionally balanced and provide a healthy start to developing taste buds.

We believe eating organically is the best way to ensure a healthy life balance, and also helps to install healthy eating practices in your child. Every effort is made to source organic produce. ( please be advised sometimes we may need to use alternatives)

There is always plenty of healthy food on the table (many of the choices are irresistible) and children are encouraged to be adventurous and sample new foods.

Food culture and routine is an important part of life at The Little Pea Pod. As well as a chance to enjoy tasty and tempting dishes, meal times provide the ideal opportunity to promote children’s social development.
Why Organic & Sustainable? imageWhy Organic & Sustainable? image
At The Little Pea Pod, we understand the impact that we have on our planet and how our actions impact future generations. We can help introduce children to the concepts of sustainability, and caring for our environment, throughout our daily routines. At nursery we introduce the concept of recycling through play. The earlier children learn the habits of recycling, the more likely they are to have ingrained recycling behaviour.

We encourage gardening and planting our own food. The children love to observe daily how the plants have grown, as well as eating from our herb garden!

We re-use recyclable items for craft activities. Everyday materials like cereal boxes, toilet rolls & aluminium cans are used in our mud kitchen and alternatively used as a container for planting our seeds in.

We are in the process of changing the majority of our resources to more sustainable choices like wooden tots rather than plastics.

Each day we make our own organic oat milk to lower our carbon footprint, by using 80% less greenhouse gas emissions than cow’s milk.

90% of baby wipes sold in the UK contain hidden plastic. Taking this into account we have lowered our carbon footprint once again by making our own organic paper wipes using organic soaps & oils.

EYFS

Early Years Foundation Stage imageEarly Years Foundation Stage image

EYFS Framework

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old.
All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, daycares, nurseries and school reception classes.

The revised framework was introduced in September 2012 with further changes taking effect from September 2014 & 2021
Its aim is to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to learn and develop through high quality play experiences allowing them to be inquisitive, imaginative and experimental empowering them to lead their own play and learning.
Play is essential for children development, children learn through play which helps them to grow in confidence, support decision making and understanding and overcoming problems.

At The Little Pea Pod Nursery we provide a balance of child and adult initiated purposeful activities taking into account children’s interests and developmental stages.

The EYFS is separated into 7 key areas.

The 3 prime areas are :-
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We ensure that children feel secure, valued and eager to learn, whilst developing respect for others and an understanding of appropriate behaviour.
  • Physical Development
We encourage young children to be active and interactive; helping to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement and as they get older, aware of their own self care encouraging independence. We also teach children to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy food choices.
  • Communication & Language
Children learn to be good communicators and staff lay down early skills for them to become confident writers, thinkers and readers by providing good role modelling and lots of opportunities to talk and hear language through storytelling and song as well as resources to explore early mark making.
and the 4 specific areas are:-
  • Mathematics
We encourage children learn to use maths in a practical way; they work things out by using shapes, counting and measuring.
  • Understanding the World
We  help children to make sense of the world by investigating and exploring and supporting pretend play.
  • Literacy
Children are encouraged to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. The Day care offers children access to an extensive range of reading materials and enthusiastic staff to foster interest in the written word/books from a young age.
  • Expressive Arts and Design
By providing resources which allow children to explore using different materials and media they can express their original ideas through activities such as messy play, music and movement and role play.

All children at The Little Pea Pod have the opportunity to explore multi sensory play either inside or outside in the garden.  Our mud kitchen gives the children opportunities to explore the textures of our wooded and secluded garden. They love to  collect leaves along with other treasures to incororate into their exploration and play.  Our sensory veggie patch is a lovely addition in the garden. The children love to dig for vegetables whilst they are learning about how things grow and our environment.

Children have access to all sorts of exciting and stimulating resources from water play to an outdoor climbing wall for their physical development.

Our dedicated Nursery staff are highly qualified, friendly and caring professionals who share our passion for excellence and respect in childcare, making a real difference to every child who attends our Nursery. A number of our staff are trained in specialist areas such as behaviour and Special Educational needs and are on hand to offer you support, advice and guidance.

Our staff are selected not only for their qualifications and experience but also for their personality and attributes. We like to offer our children a stimulating and purposeful environment; being cared for by special individuals who support our ethos.

The safeguarding and welfare of your child is of major importance to us. Therefore, we ensure that:

  • All our staff have been cleared by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

  • They have also passed our own, extra security, Vetting and Barring Scheme

  • We thoroughly investigate their personal and employment references.

  • All staff are qualified in early years childcare and/or early years education, and they receive continuing professional development.

  • All staff members are paediatric first aid trained.

  • All staff members are trained in safeguarding children in all aspects.

  • In order to maintain a high level of quality and childcare standards, performance is continually monitored and all staff have the opportunity to participate in continual professional development and training throughout the year.

We sent our daughter to The Little Pea Pod Day Care when she was just over a year old, for 3 full days per week. I liked the fact that the setting was homely but had a decent number of small people with whom she could interact. I found leaving her in the early days extremely emotional and hard, but I was beautifully supported and comforted right from the start (and made not to feel stupid although I looked and acted like a total wreck!) She developed into a happy, confident little lady who loved going to her Day Care - which I really couldn't put a price on. It certainly helped assuage any "mummy guilt" I had. We had a rather protracted move away from the area (they were exceedingly patient with us!) and finally left when our little one was 2 and three quarters, and one of my biggest concerns was that we were taking her away from a setting in which she was so comfortable. But I think they had helped form her into a confident-enough being that she managed the transition brilliantly. I couldn't recommend these people enough. I always felt that our daughter was in safe hands and they were kind and compassionate towards us as a family. Get a place here if you're lucky enough to do so!

Jemma O'Brien

Our daughter joined The Little Pea Pod over a year and it is the best decision we have ever made. She absolutely loves going to Daycare and you can see it on her face when she arrives in the morning. Michala and Behn are an amazing team. They are friendly, caring, extremely helpful and supportive. Most of all they love what they do and you can see that. Our daughter adores the attention she gets from them and usually doesn’t want to leave!!

Jenny

We are so pleased with The Little Pea Pod Nursery, which provides a creative and fun environment for our toddler. She clearly loves being dropped off at nursery and has grown in confidence since being able to mix with the other children. Behn and Michala are down to earth and approachable and our daughter smiles every time she sees them. The setting use an excellent app which lets you know how your child is through the day, and we love receiving photos or updates on her activities, and looking at all the healthy snacks and meals she is eating. The little pea pod has given our daughter a friendly and safe home-from-home environment.

Debs

Our daughter started at The Little Pea Pod when we moved to Oxted. I was so worried about settling her into a new nursery but she loved it right from her first settle session. Behn an Michala put me completely at ease and Camilla has blossomed under their care. She’s always excited to go and she can’t wait for her little sister to start there very soon. It’s a real home from home setting, with a lovely personal touch.

Nichola

Nurturing, happy and safe! Leaving your baby is never easy but staff at The Little Pea Pod make it much less painful. Behn and Michala have cared for 2 of my children from 5 months until school age and if I ever had any more I wouldn’t think twice about sending them to The Little Pea Pod! The Little Pea Pod provide detailed, regular updates on my child’s development - with direct reference to the EYFS. I feel confident that my daughter is given love and care as well as an opportunity to grow and experiment within the daycare setting. As a keyworker, I have found the staff at The Little Pea Pod have shown unending positivity and a friendly demeanour during the pandemic; this has meant Isabelle has continued to socialise with children of her age and I have gone off to work with a smile during these difficult times. I am extremely grateful for all they have done and continue to do for my children.

Katherine

My little boy has been attending The Little Pea Pod Daycare for almost a year now and he’s absolutely thrived in that time! Whenever we mention ‘nursery’ to him, his wee face lights up and he’s so happy to be dropped off in the morning, which speaks volumes about how much fun he has when he’s there. Behn and Michala provide regular updates on the Famly app so we can see how well he’s eating and sleeping, as well as sending us lovely photos and updates on his development. I would highly recommend sending your child here.

Vouchers

Childcare Vouchers is a scheme some employers offer to help working parents save on registered childcare costs. Childcare vouchers are not means tested and are available to all working parents whose companies operate childcare voucher schemes. The vouchers can be used to pay for all types of registered childcare including registered childminders, day nurseries, crèches, playgroups, out of school hours clubs, holiday play schemes and home childcarers approved under the new Home Childcarer Approval Scheme.

3 & 4 Year Free Entitlement

All three and four year olds are entitled to free early years education, comprising five 6 hour daily sessions a week, for three terms each year. Parents do not contribute towards this minimum entitlement but may be charged fees for any services or childcare that is additional to the free place.

This early years education is with a ‘registered provider’ such as a school, nursery or playgroup. Some large employers provide registered early years education at the workplace. The Government funds local authorities to ensure a free part-time early education place is available for every three and four year old in settings that have been inspected by Ofsted and found satisfactory in terms of quality in England.

Nine out of 10 families are eligible for some financial assistance through the new Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. The amount you receive will depend on your circumstances.

Families with children can claim Child Tax Credit. The amount you get depends on your annual income and is paid directly into the bank of the main carer.

The other tax credit you may be entitled to, if either you or your partner is working, is called Working Tax Credit. It includes a childcare element to help families who are working and spending money on childcare.

Reconfirming Working Parents Entitlement Eligibility Codes.

Parents need to reconfirm that they're still eligible every three months. The Department for Education will send parents a text message and/or email to remind them to reconfirm four weeks before their validity end date and again two weeks before if they still haven't reconfirmed. Please note, the Department for Education will not include a link in their text message or email for parents to click on to reconfirm their code (if parents are sent an email asking them to click on a link to reconfirm it is likely phishing). There should also be a secure message in their Childcare Service Account.

Parents will not get a new eligibility code; they'll just get a new validity end date and grace period end date. Providers do not need to tell Surrey if a parent has re-confirmed their eligibility code.

Early Years Pupil Premium

EYPP provides additional funding to settings to support children’s learning and development. This can be used for extra equipment, resources, or additional training for staff. Your child may be eligible if you are in receipt of some income related benefits or if your child is looked after by the local authority, adopted from care, has left care through a special guardianship arrangement or has left care and is subject to a child arrangement order. Further details and criteria can be found on the webpage here Early Years Pupil Premium - Surrey County Council (surreycc.gov.uk)

If you think you may be eligible, you can use the EYPP application form on page 4 of the parent declaration form. You will be asked to sign this form each funded period in order to access your funded entitlement with your early years provider. All you need to do is fill in this page of the form and The Little Pea Pod Nursery will then process the details. Any information you share will be completely confidential and this will not affect any benefits you receive.
